Not every patient’s dental visit looks the same, and it shouldn’t have to. For patients with physical, intellectual, sensory, or medical conditions that make a standard dental appointment more challenging, finding a dental practice that genuinely understands and accommodates those needs can make an enormous difference – both to the quality of care received and to how comfortable the whole experience feels.
At DC Dental Clinic in Wangaratta, care for patients with special needs is an established part of our practice, not an occasional accommodation. Here’s what that looks like in practice.
Why a Tailored Approach Matters
Every patient with additional needs is different, and a genuinely patient-centred approach means understanding each person’s specific requirements rather than applying a one-size-fits-all adjustment. This might mean extra appointment time, a different communication approach, particular positioning or equipment considerations, or simply a calmer, more gradual introduction to the dental environment for a patient who finds it overwhelming.
Taking the Time That’s Needed
One of the most important things we can offer patients with special needs is time – not rushing through an appointment, but allowing the pace that a particular patient genuinely needs. For some patients, this might mean a longer initial visit simply focused on becoming comfortable in the dental chair before any treatment is attempted. For others, it might mean breaking treatment into shorter, more manageable appointments rather than a single longer one.
Clear Communication at Every Step
Understanding what’s about to happen, and feeling a sense of control over the process – genuinely reduces anxiety for many patients with additional needs. Our team takes the time to explain each step clearly, in a way suited to the individual patient, and checks in throughout treatment rather than proceeding without ongoing communication.
Working With Families and Carers
For many patients with special needs, a family member, carer, or support worker plays an important role in the dental visit; helping with communication, providing reassurance, or simply being a familiar presence. We welcome this involvement and work collaboratively with families and carers to make each visit as smooth and positive as possible.
A Comprehensive Range of Care, Adapted as Needed
Special needs dental care at DC Dental Clinic isn’t a separate, limited service – it spans our full range of general and restorative dental care, adapted to suit each patient’s specific requirements. Whether that’s a routine check-up, a filling, or more involved treatment, our approach is to make the full scope of dental care genuinely accessible.
Our Boardmaker Booklet – A Free Resource for Patients
For patients with Autism or other learning difficulties, we’ve created a free Boardmaker booklet specifically to help. Using simple wording and diagrams, it walks through every step of visiting the dentist before the appointment even begins – giving patients and their families a clear idea of what to expect. We give this booklet to patients prior to their appointment, at no cost, and it’s theirs to keep. For many patients with special needs, simply knowing what’s coming can meaningfully ease the anxiety that a dental visit can otherwise bring.
Say Hello to Dogtor Flossy, Our Resident Therapy Dog
For nervous patients, or simply dog lovers who appreciate a friendly face, Dogtor Flossy is a familiar presence around our clinic. You’ll usually find her acting as our door greeter on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays – when she’s not outside enjoying the sunshine. For many patients, a wagging tail in the waiting room does more to ease nerves before an appointment than words alone ever could.
Getting Started
If you’re a patient with additional needs, or a family member or carer looking for a dental practice that will take the time to understand what works for your specific situation, we’d encourage you to get in touch and talk through what you need before your first appointment. A conversation beforehand often makes the whole experience considerably smoother.
